Over 50’s Exercise Classes
Did you know that after the age of 40 we start to lose our muscle size and strength? If this surprised you, keep reading!
But yes unfortunately, that is true. Once we hit 40, our bodies increasingly find it difficult to build and maintain strength – in fact, our strength declines by 3-4% every year and our muscle mass decreases by 30-50% by the time we get to 80 years old!
So what does this mean for you? Well, it highlights the importance of building and maintaining your strength and activity as we continue to age. If you are stronger and fitter as an older adult, you’ll be less likely to suffer from trips and falls and more likely to maintain your mobility and independence.
It also means the work has to start now! Think of your strength and wellbeing as like a savings account at the bank. The more we save now, the more we can withdraw later when we need it.
Even though most people know they need to make a start, quite often they aren’t sure how. That’s where the team at Momentum come in.
Our Over 50’s Exercise Class is designed to help you get started and not only get on the path to being stronger and fitter, but also help you learn the basics that will continue to help you throughout your life.

Not used to a gym environment?
Don’t worry, the class is about learning how to get stronger and move better to give you some independence and be comfortable in the gym environment. No previous gym experience or assessment is required before joining. The programme is designed to be progressive over the 6 weeks, but small adjustments can be made to make sure you get the best service for you. You should come prepared to train in comfortable gym clothing. Bring a bottle of water and a bit of craic!
What do the classes entail?
You will be following a progressive gym based programme over 6 weeks. The programme will involve some specific warm up exercises to get you ready for the session. You will then be coached and supervised through some resistance based exercise that will be a mix of weights based equipment. You will be progressively challenged over the 6 weeks to get stronger. The first 2 weeks will be about becoming familiar with the programme and session structure, with the remaining 4 weeks to really push your strength and start moving better within your current ability.
