Your Guide to Moving Forward with Confidence

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee or hip is one of the most common joint conditions affecting adults over the age of 60. It can lead to pain, stiffness, reduced mobility, and in some cases, a decline in overall quality of life. But while OA is progressive, it is also very manageable — and with the right support, you can maintain independence, stay active, and continue doing the things you enjoy.

At Momentum SIC, we provide structured, evidence-based support for individuals living with osteoarthritis. Our services include targeted injury rehabilitation packages designed specifically to help people over 60 reduce joint pain, improve function, and regain confidence in movement.

What Is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition caused by the gradual breakdown of cartilage — the smooth tissue that cushions the ends of bones. Over time, this breakdown can lead to:

  • Joint pain (especially with movement or weight-bearing)
  • Swelling and stiffness
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Changes in gait or posture due to compensatory movement patterns

The knee and hip are two of the most commonly affected joints due to their central role in mobility and weight-bearing.

Why OA Becomes More Common After 60

Age-related changes in joint health are natural. As we get older, the cumulative effects of wear and tear, previous injuries, reduced muscle strength, and lifestyle factors (like long-term inactivity or high-impact activity) increase the risk of developing OA.

In addition, OA can be influenced by:

  • Genetics
  • Past surgeries or trauma to the joint
  • Obesity (increasing joint load)
  • Poor biomechanics or alignment issues

Management: Evidence-Based, Non-Surgical Interventions First

While joint replacement surgery is a valid treatment for advanced OA, non-surgical interventions are the first-line recommendation for most individuals — especially in the early to moderate stages. These include:

Exercise therapy: Targeted strengthening, stretching, and mobility work can reduce joint load, support stability, and decrease pain.
Weight management: If applicable, even small reductions in body weight can significantly reduce stress on the joints.
Manual therapy: Hands-on treatments may help reduce muscle tightness, improve circulation, and alleviate discomfort.
Education and lifestyle modification: Understanding how to pace activities, modify movement, and avoid flare-ups is key.
Pain management: Medications, heat/cold therapy, and joint supports may be useful in conjunction with rehab.
